Leisure Time

The small villages and larger communities along Lake Constance enchant the locals as well as the tourists with their southern charm.

Friedrichshafen, the county seat of the Lake Constance District and popular shopping city, is known as the place the Zeppelin originated. The beautiful boardwalk with countless cafés, ports and ferry ports, the cultural centre Graf Zeppelin House as well as two large museums about aviation, the Dornie Museum and the Zeppelin Museum, can be reached quickly.

A special highlight of your visit could be a sightseeing flight with the “Zeppelin NT” – or a boat trip with the historical paddle steamer “Hohentwiel.”

Within a few kilometres time and place change: it is about 20 km from the museums of Zeppelin and Dornier in Friedrichshafen to the lake dwellings in Unteruhldingen.
Unteruhldingen also has a Mediterranean-style port, offers a home to exotic animals in its reptile house and accommodates angels in the Birnau Monastery’s splendid church.

Meersburg is enchanting – with its romantic corners and picturesque alleys, medieval wrinkled facades and modern walls, with Germany's oldest inhabited castles and with the new palace, with the Meersburger Therme (thermal bath) and the beach pool with its 50 m pool.

The lively university city of Constance with its rich history and cultural life, directly at the border to Switzerland and located attractively between Lake Constance and the Rhine, can be reached from Friedrichshafen by catamaran.

A further attraction here: the Sealife Centre in Constance with 30 large aquariums and more than 3,000 fresh and saltwater fish.

Mainau island, A paradise of flowers and home of the Count Bernadotte family can be reached by water or via Constance.

The World Cultural Heritage Reichenau Island is located in Lake Constance and can be reached via a dam.

To Salem and the Affenberg. To reach the home of the Barbary macaques, you travel about 20 km.

The dream of all children is also in the hinterland of Lake Constance – the amusement park Ravensburger Spieleland in Meckenbeuren.

The Bavarian Lake Constance metropolis Lindau is near – and even in – the water.

Nearby Switzerland displays its most attractive side with Romanshorn, and the Abbey Library of St. Gallen and Mount Säntis at a height of 2,502 metres - and Vorarlberg with the Bregenzerwald Cheese Road, the Bregenz Festival and Mount Pfänder with its spectacular view and alpine wildlife park and eagle observatory.

Even during the cool period of the year, excursions at Lake Constance are a feast for the eyes. Mainau and Reichenau lie calmly in the water. The baroque church Birnau shows its quiet face. The catamaran between Friedrichshafen and Constance glides proudly and almost silently through the water, frost flowers are blossoming, the world seems to be holding its breath…
